History

Agra is a city steeped in history. Once the capital of the Mughal Empire, it has been witness to some of India’s most significant events. The origins of Agra can be traced back to the ancient era when it was known as Agraban or Agrevana.

During medieval times, Agra became an important center for trade and commerce under the Delhi Sultanate. In 1506, Sikander Lodhi made Agra his capital and embarked on a mission to beautify the city with impressive monuments that still stand today.

In 1526, Babur founded the Mughal Empire after defeating Ibrahim Lodi at Panipat. He moved his capital from Delhi to Agra and began construction on what would become one of India’s most famous landmarks – The Taj Mahal.

Under Akbar’s reign (1556-1605), Agra flourished both economically and culturally. He built several magnificent buildings including Fatehpur Sikri – which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
