History

Chitrakoot is known for its rich and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama spent a significant amount of time in Chitrakoot during his 14 years of exile. It is believed that he spent over 11 years in the forests around Chitrakoot.

The town has also played an important role during the Gupta period as it was part of the Dakshinapatha route, which connected northern India with southern India. The region was also ruled by several dynasties including the Mauryan empire, Kosal state, Mughal empire and British Raj.

During the Indian Independence struggle, Chitrakoot became a significant center as Mahatma Gandhi visited this place on numerous occasions. In fact, two famous freedom fighters- Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi- were imprisoned in Chitrakoot jail for their involvement in Indian Freedom Struggle.

Today, one can still witness remnants of these historical events through places such as Ram Ghat where Lord Rama is said to have bathed during his stay here or at Bharat Milap temple where Bharata met Lord Rama after he returned from his exile.
